Microsoft says Windows 7 outdated, not secured with patches

Microsoft on Tuesday warned business customers to begin migrating from Windows 7, exactly three years before it reaches end of life. Mr Markus Nitschke, the Head of Windows at Microsoft Germany in a statement said that enterprises would pay dearly for sticking with the platform’s outdated security compared with Windows 10.

According to him, Windows 7 does not meet the requirements of modern technology, nor the high security requirements of IT departments. “While newer tools make Windows 7 less difficult for enterprise customers to migrate from than XP, Microsoft is still urging corporate customers to begin the transition three years out from Windows 7’s end of support. “They stressed that enterprise faces enormous dangers if they do not.

“Microsoft has kicked off its three-year countdown for Windows 7’s end of extended support, warning enterprises they will pay dearly for sticking with the platform’s outdated security compared with Windows 10.

“Enterprises can of course delay upgrading until Jan. 13, 2020, when extended support ends for the 2009 OS and it no longer receives patches, unless the customer is paying for a pricey Microsoft Custom Support Agreement. “However, as Microsoft has warned, Windows 7, which moved to extended support in 2015, is outdated and will drive up operating costs from remediating malware attacks that wouldn’t penetrate Windows 10 systems.

“As early as in Windows XP, we saw that companies should take early steps to avoid future risks or costs,” he said. Nitschke said that the message came as Microsoft published research showing that Windows 10 Anniversary Update in-built security could neutralise two recent zero-day exploits even without the patches required to protect earlier versions of Windows.

He said that Windows 10’s modern security features touted by Microsoft include Windows Hello biometric login, its AppContainer sandboxing technology, and Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection. According to him, it will gain new features in the upcoming Creators Update.

He said due to the pressure to upgrade, enterprise organisations on Windows 7 soon would not have the additional zero-day protection offered by EMET or the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit since 2009. Nitschke added that Microsoft in November extended EMET’s end of life from January 2017 to July 31, 2018.

You can also use ISO file to create a bootable drive and do a clean install.

How to Stop Windows 7 and 8 from downloading windows 10

It has been observed  that Microsoft is auto-downloading Windows 10installation files which is between 3.5GB and 6GB — onto users' PCs even if they have not opted into the upgrade.
Microsoft plans to deploy Windows 10 on over 1 Billion devices worldwide, and this auto-downloading Windows 10 could be one of its many strategies to achieve its goal.

The company has dropped and saved a hidden $Windows.~BT folder on your PC's main drive (C drive), if you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

The bottom line is:
Many Windows users are on limited or metered Internet connections. As Microsoft is not only consuming storage space but also using user's Internet bandwidth for large unrequested files, as the Windows 10 installer downloads up to 6 gigabytes.
The methods below works better

Method 1

Methods that you can use to stop Microsoft from automatically downloading Windows 10 installation files.

This method is applicable for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users and specifically targets the Windows 10 download files.
  • Install KB3065987 (for Windows 7) or KB3065988 (for Windows 8.1) updates from Microsoft's official website, depending on the operating system you are using
  • Now restart your computer and open up the registry editor (search Regedit)
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  • Right-click "Windows", and Select New, then Key and then Type "WindowsUpdate"
  • Click on the newly created "WindowsUpdate" key and create a 32-bit DWORD called "DisableOSUpgrade" with a value of 1.
  • Restart your computer. That's it.

Method 2

Both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users can simply choose to disable downloading of all Windows updates.

For this you need to follow some simple steps:
  • Go to Windows Update
  • Click on Change settings
  • Select "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
Once selected, Windows Update will notify you of updates, and you have to manually choose to install each and every update.

Use Windows 7 at Your Own Risk

Microsoft WARNING — 'Use Windows 7 at Your Own Risk'

During a recent interview with the Windows Weekly, Microsoft chief marketing officer Chris Capossela warned about the risks of using Windows 7 and urged users that it's time to switch to the new Windows 10 operating system instead.

Capossela also stressed that Windows 7 is apparently less secure than Windows 10, so it is "so incredibly important to try to end the fragmentation of the Windows install base" as well as to get them to a "safer place."
In this statement the so-called safer place Microsoft means is its newest operating system Windows 10.

Here’s what Capossela worried for Windows 7 Users:
"We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a new game, they buy Fallout 4, a very popular game, and it doesn’t work on a bunch of older machines.

And so, as we are pushing our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems."
