Easy step by step guide to e-Filing of Income Tax Returns for the AY 2013-14

Breaking News : The last date of filing Income Tax extended upto 5.8.2013, e-file your return now
Easy step by step guide to e-Filing of Income Tax Returns for the AY 2013-14

The month of July will start in few days and all salaried class employees and self employed individuals have to fill their Income Tax Returns for the Financial Year 2012-13, Assessment Year 2013-14 by 31st July, 2013.

Normally this would not have been a problem, you could have filled the Saral for AY 2013-14 and sent it to the local ITO for submission.  However this year onwards the Income Tax Department has made e-Filing compulsory for individuals whose Gross Taxable Amount is about 5,00,000.00.

For those whose Income is below 5,00,000.00, there is no need to file the returns as be current Income Tax laws.  But if you still want to file your returns, you can use the Saral Forms and send them to local ITO as you did last year.

I am writing this easy step by step article for those who want to e-File a return using Income Tax login.

First and foremost go to here Income Tax e-Filing Website and create a login id and password.   There is a green button saying Register Yourself on the Right hand side of the Website, click on it and get yourself registered.  Give your current active email id for registration details and the password should be one capital, one alpha numeric and 8 characters or more.  Optimal password would be Aaaa@12345 (replace with the words of your choice).  Another thing to remember is the 'Secret Answer', this one will help you recreate your password if you have forgotten it (it really helps because most of us tend including me forget the password as Income Tax filing comes once a year).
Easy step by step guide to e-Filing of Income Tax Returns for the AY 2013-14

Now if you have done the above correctly proceed.  Before proceeding, another word of caution, use a PC with genuine Winsows OS on it.  Pirated version is known to give problems while validating the xml file.  You will need to keep your PAN number and Form 16 at hand while e-Filing the return so be sure they are nearby.

Now open the Income Tax e-Filing Website and download ITR1 and save it to a location preferably on your C drive. The downloads are below the Register yourself button on the right hand side.  The file is zip one which you can extract there itself.
Easy step by step guide to e-Filing of Income Tax Returns for the AY 2013-14
Now you have download it and extracted it, dont open the file as you have to enable Macros and ActiveX components to run and validate the file.  To enable them,  Go to Microsoft Excel, open it and then go to Office button with a MS Office picture on the top left hand.  Click the Office button and you will be present with New, Open, Save and Save as Menu.  At the bottom of the Menu there is a button called Excel Options as per image below :

Click on the Excel Options button and go to the 8th button saying Trust Centre and open it.  Once you open Trust Centre, go to Trust Centre Setting at the right hand down corner.  Open the settings and go to 4th button called ActiveX settings and enable all the ActiveX controls (4th button).  Go back to Trust Centre Setting and click on Macro Settings (5th button), here too, enable all Macros (4th button). Say ok and close the Excel Window.

Now go the file which you had extracted earlier (named 2013_ITR1_PR6.xls), double click on it and the Excel Workbook will open with 4 sheets in it namely Income Details, TDS, Taxes Paid and Verification and 80G.

Go to the Sheets one by one and fill the details.  In the Income Details sheet, enter all relevant data correctly like PAN No, your Mobile No. (do not give the STD code, the sheet then gives error),  Date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format, Employee Category, Income Tax Ward/Circle (Mumbai is 11(1)), say no to are you governed by Portuguese Civil law (I dont know what that means),  Residential Status etc.

Once you have filled in all the details press Validate at the top right, if you have correctly filled in correctly the file will validate.  If not it will give a error message.  Read the error message, its in some kind of foreign language but you can understand the gist of it.  Go to the column it wants correction and correct it.

Once validated you can print the xls file to be on safer side and for help next year and press Generate Xml button.  A xml file will be saved to the same location where you had save the zip file.

Now go back to Income Tax e-Filing website and log in. Go to upload xml button and upload the file.  You will receive a message saying that your file has been uploaded and download the ITRV file(you will receive the same in your mail also).  You have to download this file, take a printout and send it to the following address. The ITRV is password protected.

Your ITR-V/ Acknowledgment is protected by a password for your security. Please enter your PAN (in small letters) and Date of Birth or Incorporation (in ddmmyyyy format), in combination, to view your ITR-V/Acknowledgment. If your pan is AAAPA0000A and the date of birth is 10-Jan-2008, then the password will be aaapa0000a10012008.

Remember to send it by Speed Post/Ordinary Post only Courier is not allowed.

Address :
Income Tax Department - Centralized Processing Centre,Post Bag No - 1,Electronic City Post Office,Bangalore - 560100,Karnataka - India.

If you have any problems with the above kindly comment on it and I will try to solve your problem.  If you have successfully filed your e-Return with my tutorial, kindly post in your comments also.

Update : Government has made filing returns compulsory for even those who earn less then Rs.5.00 lakhs.  I have posted a easier online tutorial for e-Filing which you can get here

Get a GamePop Mini free with GamePop 1 year subscription; Android based gaming console from BlueStacks

Get a GamePop Mini free with GamePop 1 year subscription; Android based gaming console from BlueStacks

I had reported about GamePop by BlueStacks a Indian run startup, which will now support iOS Apps and Games.   Well the company is not resting on its laurels.  Facing the heat from Ouya, which incidentally was declared a sold out just moments after it went for sale, GamePop makers have announce a gaming console of the size of a packet of gum to be given free with 1 year subscription of the GamePop console.

The GamePop console itself is free if a buyer takes a 1 year subscription for $6.99 (Rs.420.00) a month upto July 1.  So as a buyer you will get GamePop and GamePop Mini if you go for the yearly subscription offer from BlueStacks within next two days.

Though not much is known about the hardware and specs of GamePop Mini it is said to have the pretty much same capabilities as GamePop sans some ports and accessibility options.

The GamePop supports Android and iOS games and Apps which can be played and run on your normal Television sets.  After July 1 the  GamePop  console will cost $129 (Rs 7700.00).

Unity Engine now comes to Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

Game developers must be having their best phase ever.  Yesterday I  had reported that Valve had released its Source SDK 2013 with support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headsetfor Linux and today Unity has announced support for Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.  This news comes just a month after Unity had made its engine available to developers for free.
Unity Engine now comes to Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

The move came from Microsoft and Unity at the Build 2013 DevCon and it was was announced that the highly versatile Unity 3D game engine will be supported on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

The release further adds that Unity will be developing new tools that will support Microsoft's next generation console and also actively be involved in the present ones.   It will bring together marriage of two technologies with Unity 3D game engine on one side and multiplayer matchmaking, SmartGlass, Kinect gesture recognition and Microsoft's Azure cloud technology on the other.

The bad new is that only those developers who are working with  Microsoft Studios will get access to the developer tools for free.  Which means that other developers will have to pay for the services.

The Unity CEO David Helgason has noted that
"I'm also happy to say that the Windows Store Pro publishing add-on will be free when released, You'll be able to port your games, ads, training and educational apps-any kind of Unity-authored content-to both the Windows Store Apps and Windows Phone 8 platforms with a Unity Pro 4 license."

Will this birth of a new era in game developing, that only time will tell but the move is sure to elate the game developers community because of wide  popularity of the game engine.  Organ Trail: Director's Cut to turn-based RPG Knights of Pen & Paper, Surgeon Simulator 2013 are some of the games which have been developed using Unity.

Will keep you posted on any further developments in the gaming development world.

New stock camera App for Android which lets you click pictures by pressing volume up or down button

How would like to have a separate button to click your images on your Android device?  It would be nice not to negotiate the image quality while tapping the click image option button and have a simple Nokia type button to click the snap.  Well the Google is coming out with AOSP stock versions of different Apps and the new stock camera App has that feature.  I will tell you about the camera and its features later.

First understand what AOSP is.  AOSP is a custom ROM built from the official, google-endorsed Android source, with stock apps and widgets.  It is believed to precursor to the soon to be released Android 4.3 and any App that comes from the AOSP platform will be inbuilt in the next version of Android.  Google has been coming out with AOSP running versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One.

Now about this Camera App.  The App displays the shooting modes on a curved line which will appear when you press and hold the screen.  Once this curved line appears you can have direct access to various camera options like HDR, exposure etc.  If you want to access further options you can get to them from the same semi-circle.  These options include the geo tagging toggle.

But the best part is the ability to click pictures by just pressing volume up and down buttons as I have mentioned in the title of this article.  This feature is sorely missed by all Android devices and you have to get into a rather awkward hold position while tapping the on screen click button.  The new stock camera App allows you the freedom to take a wonder image by just clicking the volume up or down button.  This works even for self image with the front camera.

Just a word worth noting is that you will have to disable your Camera App first in order to allow the new stock App to function properly because some of the new features may not work on all devices as smoothly as they do on the S4 or the HTC One.

Interested to download the APK file of the stock camera Camera App?  I bet you are, I did it the first thing I came to know about it.  Download the APK from here.  The mirror site is here.

A delight for Game developers, Valve releases source SDK 2013 for Linux, supports Oculus Rift virtual reality headset

A delight for Game developers, Valve releases source SDK 2013 for Linux, supports Oculus Rift virtual reality headset

Valve had made a promise to the game developers some time back that it will release the source Software Development Kit for Linux.  Well it has made good its promise by releasing the same. The company has its Source software development kit, Source SDK 2013, which will now support Linux in addition to Windows and Mac OS X. However the mega news for gamers is that Valve has added support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in this edition of the SDK.

For the uninitiated, the Source SDK can be used by game developers to develop new game mods. The support for Linux means game mods can now build and run clients on Linux computers. Earlier the Valve had support only for Windows despite the games being available for all platforms.  Linux will get dedicated servers support with this SDK.

Valve has made a lot of changes in the new SDK, the biggest being the entire source code is now hosted on Github the latest hit portal for developers and publishers. The company has also changed the license that makes it easier for developers to share their mods and changes to the SDK.

The new SDK will however not ship the modding tools such as Hammer which is used for modelling and level design, it will have to ship with the respective game.  Valve has also phased out the launcher, instead, you will have to navigate to where the tools are stored as batch files and launch them.

Steam’s new delivery service, Steam Pipe, is now supported by the sample mods, and existing mods’ gameinfo.txt can be changed to match the new format to support Steam Pipe support.  Valve will now support Oculus Rift which mean that game developers will have to run compatible mods with “-vr” on the command line to enable head tracking and run the mod in stereo on the virtual reality headset. Gamers will remember that Valve added Oculus Rift support to Team Fortress and Half Life 2 earlier this year.

To download the Valve's Software Development Kit (SDK 2013) visit here.

PlayStation 3 (PS3) step by step guide for the bricking caused by the updated firmware 4.45

PlayStation 3 (PS3) step by step guide for the bricking caused by the updated firmware 4.45

If you own a PS3 you may have bricked your console when you updated to the PlayStation 3 firmware update released by Sony last week.  Though the bricking only occurred only if you were using a modified HDD but still there are many a hard core gamers who use their own modified HDD and may have been affected by this firmware.

Sony has finally released a patch which involves manually doing the things which I am putting down below :
Step 1: Manually Download System Software
You will need a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive with at least 168 MB of free space. If your PS3 is either CECHA00/CECHB00 series model, you can also use Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, and CompactFlash®.
Create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device.
Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named "UPDATE".
Using your computer, click the following hyperlink to begin downloading system software 4.46
Download the update data from the webpage and save it in the "UPDATE" folder.
Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”
Note: If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3 will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.

Step 2: Activate Safe Mode
With the PS3 off (power light should be red), touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the 1st beep indicating that the PS3 is powering on.
Continue to hold the power button, and after approximately 5 seconds you will hear a 2nd beep.
Continue to hold the power button and after 5 more seconds you'll hear a 3rd beep, and system will power off (Power light goes red).
Release power button.
Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the 1st beep, again for PS3 power on.
Continue to hold and after approximately 5 seconds you will hear the 2nd beep for video reset.
Continue to hold and after 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep.  At that point release power button.
If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button".
Connect a controller to the PS3 with a USB cable.
If you were not able to get into Safe Mode, your system may need service for which please contact the authorised service centre of Sony.

Step 3: Manually Update PS3 Software
Connect the storage media to PS3 system.
Select [6 - System Update] and Press X.
Please note: Data and settings may be deleted if you choose any of the first (5) options. Please make sure to only choose option [6 - System Update].
Press Start and Select at the same time.
The PS3 system will restart and recognizes the update file in the storage media.
Press right on the d-pad to scroll through the update description and user agreement.
Press X to confirm the update.
The system will now install the new system software and restart automatically upon completion.

If all above three steps fail to bring your PlayStation 3 back to life, you can visit this website for further assistance.

The new update fixes the issues with the 4.45 firmware update that caused any PS3 with a modified HDD to brick. So far, the update doesn’t seem to have affected any console with the default HDD. Sony has since pulled the 4.45 firmware from its official listing of the update page.

Facebook and Google come up with Emoji and Easter Egg to celebrate repeal of 1996 DOMA by US Supreme Court

Few people in the world other then United States may know this but California had banned gay marriages due to a 1996 Federal Law.  The Supreme Court of the United States of America on Wednesday struck down the 17 year old law called 'DOMA.'  The US Supreme Court overturned DOMA in a 5-4 vote. Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy found the act violated the Fifth Amendment's due process clause.  Passed in 1996, DOMA defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman for the purposes of federal law essentially making a gay marriage illegal act under the provisions.

And the tech giants welcomed the repeal of DOMA in their own style.   Facebook now lets users can show their support for the decision by clicking on the a rainbow icon from the  smiley images that appear just below their status update box.  The rainbow is meant to denote gay pride and hence the emoji will indicate that the user is part of the growing world gay pride order.  According to the report, the rainbow icon as well as the words "feeling pride" will appear after selection next to a user's name. In some cases, the additions will appear next to the user’s status update message.

Voice calls, videos calls, P2P file sharing with new Mozilla Firefox browser for Windows, Mac and Android devices

A June parting gift from Mozilla, make voice calls and videos calls from the new Mozilla Firefox 22 browser for PC and Mac and Android devices.  Mozilla this week updated Firefox to version 22 and with it brings nice little changes to the browser.  For one it is very stable, and now supports video Chat, voice calling and P2P file sharing from within the browser itself.  The Peer to Peer (P2P) sharing has been made possible because of Mozilla guys have made WebRTC default in the new version.

For those who are interested in browser history and web based development, this update is really a big leap because the default  WebRTC will now allow developers to create web apps with built-in voice and video calling, and peer-to-peer file sharing without having to implement third-party plugins or software like Adobe Flash etc.  This also means that security wise your computer and browser are much safer.  Developers just have to add a few lines of codes to draw out the full potential WebRTC’s PeerConnection and DataChannel components to add video/voice calling and file sharing capabilities to the Web Apps being developed by them.

This update is also important for the App developers of Firefox OS for smart phones.  The browser also comes enabled with Asm.js optimisations, which is a subset of JavaScript that lets web apps run just like the inbuilt native programs. Which means the App and game developers can use the engine from within the browser to run 3D Apps and games.

Mozilla first demoed this capability at the Game Developers Conference in March. The company teamed up with Epic Games to port the Citadel demo and Unreal Tournament to Asm.js, and showed off the two ports running natively in Firefox.

The Windows version of the browser now will display scaling options so that the text size is rendered as per the resolution.  which means the new Firefox browser will render text in a larger font if your display is HD and lower the rendition for normal displays.   The Mac OSX version now puts a download progress icon in the Dock. The WebGL rendering has also been improved.

The Android version now scales completely to present the full tablet UI on smaller screens which is really helpful if you have a 4.3 inch Android device.  The WebGL rendering performance has been also improved through “asynchronous canvas updates” according to Mozilla guys.   The release makes a interesting fact as Microsoft today released a preview of IE11.  Maybe the browser wars will start afresh now

The 8XT will have all the necessary connectivity options like Wifi, LTE, bluetooth etc.   The HTC 8XT will be powered by  1800 mAh battery which seems to be on a lower side considering this medium specced phone.  The best part of HTC is its front speakers boom sound.

2. Samsung Ativ S Neo

This is good news for both users and Microsoft because Microsoft has just crossed 100000 Apps on Windows Phone store as well as launched a preview of Windows 8.1.

Do watch out for the very very small terms and conditions on the Sprint page for any hidden charges.

Intel started the GHz wars with Pentium a decade ago and now the memory wars have come to the footsteps of smartphones, tablets and phablets.  The powerful Snapdragon processor has been the choice of almost all Android phone makers because of its speed, versatility and performance.  Sony has taken that a step further with announcement of launch of Xperia Z Ultra smart phone which will be powered by Snapdragon 800.

The Xperia Z Ultra will run on a Snapdragon 800, making it the first ever device to run on Qualcomm’s super chip. The quad-core processor is clocked at 2.2 GHz and has LTE and HD Voice capabilities if your carrier supports it.

The Xperia Z Ultra will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Sony's own UI for starters.  It will have a big big screen of 6.44 inch display the biggest Sony has ever made. The display on the device will use the Sony’s new Triluminous technology and has a full HD resolution of 1080p, giving it a pixel density of 342 ppi.

The Xperia Z Ultra will come with all connectivity options like LTE, 3G, 2G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC.   The smart phone will be  6.5 mm thick, making it the slimmest smartphone with a full HD display in the world and also will be easy on weight with just  212 g .  It will have OmniBalance design like Xperia Z and Xperia Z Tablet and will be available in three colours, black, white and purple.

As is now the norm with Sony devices, the Z Ultra will also have the underwater and dust resist IP55 and IP58 certification.  It also has an 8MP Camera on the rear with the Sony’s superb Exmor RS sensor which will make HDR video recording and the Superior Auto mode a breeze.  The Z Ultra will sport a 3000 mAh battery to power all of the above and will also have the Sony's trademark Stamina mode which lets you manage the battery usage.

The best feature of Z Ultra is yet to come.  You can you any pen or pencil with  tip diameter of more than 1mm as a stylus on the Z Ultra making it first device to sport such kind of feature.

However a word of caution, the phone will be highest price phone with all these super features and will be available only in Sept-Dec 2013 period

CyanogenMod 10.1 stable build released today but few phones with Tegra and Exynos missing from lineup

As of now, the team doesn't plan on releasing the ROM for devices that haven't had release candidates of 10.1 released for them so far.  The CyanogenMod team has also announced that the build will not be available for devices that run on Tegra 2 and some of Samsung's Exynos-powered devices which include Galaxy S III (International I9300 model), Galaxy Note 1 and 2.  CyanogenMod will release a status report for these devices as early as next week.

CyanogenMod’s ROMs are custom ROMs based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and come without any gloatware, bloatware that the carriers or manufacturers often add to the smart phones before shipping it.  It also removes the default custom UI like Sense for HTC which is often criticised

Further the CyanogenMod ROMs always give you, the user a way to incorporate additional tweaks and tools to improve performance and battery life.  It also grants you root access which mean you can always try out new things like install, modify and tweak system-level apps and code in the Android operating system.

CM 10.1 is based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, whereas CM 10 was based on Android 4.1. CyanogenMod 9 is based on Android v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and while many of the ports for unsupported devices have some issues, the team counts the ROM stable enough and said that they will be maintaining the ROM and fixing any major issues that come up.

Interested, then visit the CyanogenMods web portal here and get the ROM of your choice.  Remember that your devices needs to be carrier-unlocked, rooted and the CWM or TWRP Recovery installed.
